Blue Box Season 2 premieres on Sunday, October 4, 2026, bringing Taiki, Chinatsu and Hina back for the Fall 2026 anime season. The first season was one of the biggest romance anime of the decade on Netflix, and the sequel arrives with a new director, the same writer, and a manga that has now reached its ending. Here is everything confirmed so far: the release date, staff, trailer, where to stream it and what the new season covers.
Blue Box Season 2 release date
Season 2 (Ao no Hako Season 2) starts in Japan on October 4, 2026. Current broadcast listings put the premiere in a Sunday 4:30 pm JST slot, a move from Season 1’s late-night Thursday airing that suggests the network is treating it as a mainstream, family-hour show this time. Netflix carried Season 1 worldwide and is already listed as the streaming home for Season 2, so international viewers should expect episodes the same day.
An episode count has not been announced. Season 1 ran for 25 episodes across two consecutive cours (October 2024 to March 2025), and the studio has given no indication of a shorter run, so a two-cour season is the reasonable expectation until confirmed.

Where Season 2 picks up
Blue Box follows Taiki Inomata, a badminton player at Eimei Academy, who has been in love with basketball ace Chinatsu Kano since the day he saw her practising alone in the gym. When Chinatsu’s parents move overseas she ends up living with Taiki’s family, and the series becomes a slow, honest story about two athletes chasing national tournaments while trying to figure out what they are to each other, with Taiki’s childhood friend Hina Chono carrying feelings of her own.
Season 1 took the story through Taiki’s first year: the move-in, the summer tournaments, Hina’s confession and the point where Taiki finally stops hiding how he feels. Season 2 continues directly from there, into Taiki’s second year, where the manga shifts its focus from “will he say it” to what a relationship between two people with very different competitive timelines actually looks like, alongside the inter-high badminton and basketball tournaments that structure the story.

How much manga is left to adapt
Kouji Miura’s Blue Box manga began in Weekly Shonen Jump in April 2021 and, according to current listings, concluded in July 2026. That matters for the anime in two ways. First, Season 2 is being produced with the full story known, which usually means cleaner pacing and a proper endpoint rather than an anime-original stopgap. Second, Season 1 covered roughly the first third of the manga, so even a second 25-episode season will not reach the finale; a third season or a film would be needed to finish the adaptation.
The English manga is published by VIZ Media and is available in full on the Shonen Jump app if you want to read ahead of the anime.
Studio and staff changes
The biggest change is behind the camera. Season 1 was produced at Telecom Animation Film and directed by Yuichiro Yano; Season 2 moves to Electric Circus (with UNLIMITED PRODUCE by TMS) under director Daisuke Sakou. Continuity comes from Yuuko Kakihara, who returns for series composition and scripts after handling Season 1, and from character designer and chief animation director Miho Tanino, so the show should look and read the same even with a new studio on the credits.
- Original creator: Kouji Miura (Weekly Shonen Jump)
- Director: Daisuke Sakou
- Series composition / script: Yuuko Kakihara
- Character design / chief animation director: Miho Tanino
- Sound director: Jin Aketagawa
- Opening theme: aiko
The opening theme by aiko is a notable get: she is one of Japan’s most successful singer-songwriters, and her involvement mirrors the way Season 1 used Official HIGE DANdism and Eve to sell the show to a wider audience.

Where to watch Blue Box Season 2
Netflix streams Blue Box worldwide and lists Season 2 on the same title page as Season 1. During the first season new episodes arrived on Netflix shortly after the Japanese broadcast each week, and there is no indication that will change. All 25 episodes of Season 1 are available there now if you need to catch up; the recap is short, so start from episode 1 rather than skipping ahead.

Why Blue Box Season 2 is a big deal
Blue Box Season 1 finished with an average score of 81 on AniList and became one of the most-watched romance anime on Netflix, rare for a genre that usually lives on Crunchyroll. It did that without a gimmick: no isekai hook, no supernatural twist, just a sports-romance told with unusual patience. That is exactly why Season 2 is the third most-anticipated series of Fall 2026 by AniList follower count, behind only The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 and Black Clover, and well ahead of Dragon Ball Super: Beerus.
