A Certain Dark Item Release Date, Staff and Where to Watch

A Certain Dark Item key visual showing ITEM in Academy City at night

The Toaru franchise is back on television this Friday. A Certain Dark Item, known in Japan as Toaru Anbu no Shoujo Kyousei, premieres on 9 October 2026, and it hands a full series to ITEM, the four girl squad from Academy City’s underworld who spent their last appearance as antagonists.

Tatsuyuki Nagai is directing, J.C.STAFF is animating, and every one of the four leads is voiced by the same actor who played her in 2013. Here is the broadcast schedule, the staff and cast, where to watch, and one scheduling quirk worth knowing if you are trying to avoid spoilers.

A Certain Dark Item release date and broadcast times

The series starts on Friday 9 October 2026. The timings differ by channel, and one of them is five hours ahead of the others.

AT-X Friday 9 October, 22:30 JST. First broadcast
TOKYO MX Friday 9 October, 24:30 JST
BS11 Friday 9 October, 24:30 JST
AT-X repeats Tuesdays 10:30 and Thursdays 16:30

An episode count has not been announced, by either the official site or AniList.

The streaming schedule is unusually staggered

This is the part worth reading carefully, because the gap between the earliest and latest legal stream is a full week.

  • Already streamed. Episode 1 had an advance realtime broadcast on ABEMA on Saturday 3 October at 23:00 JST. That was live only, so it is not sitting there to catch up on.
  • ABEMA Premium. Thursday 8 October, 24:30 JST, a day ahead of the TV premiere.
  • ABEMA, free tier. Friday 9 October, 24:30 JST, alongside broadcast.
  • Everyone else. d Anime Store, U-NEXT, DMM TV, Hulu, FOD Premium, Anime Hodai, niconico and Prime Video all start on Friday 16 October at 12:00 JST. A few, including J:COM STREAM, TELASA and milplus, start on 17 October.

Outside Japan, Crunchyroll is listed as the streaming home. If you follow Japanese social media, the realistic spoiler window opens on 8 October and stays open for more than a week before most services catch up.

Who ITEM are, and why this is a strange series to headline

Academy City runs on espers, and underneath its official face sits a Dark Side of units that take the jobs nobody admits to. ITEM is one of those units, made of four girls.

Shizuri Mugino is a Level 5, one of the city’s seven strongest espers, and her ability Meltdowner fires a beam of electrons that behave as both particle and wave. Rikou Takitsubo can read and track the AIM fields that espers emit. Frenda Seivelun fights with explosives and traps rather than a power. Saiai Kinuhata manipulates nitrogen and plays defence.

Readers of the franchise will know these four from the Railgun side of the story, where they did not appear as heroes. Building a series around them is the most interesting choice here, and it is the reason the two key visuals are doing such different jobs: one shows four friends walking through the city in daylight, the other shows the same four in an alley at night with Mugino looming over them.

Staff: the Railgun team, reassembled

The continuity here is unusually tight for a spin off.

Original work Kazuma Kamachi, published by Dengeki Bunko
Original illustrations Nilitsu
Original character design Kiyotaka Haimura and Nilitsu
Director Tatsuyuki Nagai
Series composition Shougo Yasukawa
Character design Shigeki Kimoto
Animation character design cooperation Kiyotaka Haimura, Nilitsu, Motoi Fuyukawa, strelka
Music Maiko Iuchi
Sound director Jin Aketagawa
Art director Teruhiko Niita
Animation production J.C.STAFF

Two names stand out. Tatsuyuki Nagai directed both seasons of A Certain Scientific Railgun, so the person who put ITEM on screen in the first place is running this one. And Motoi Fuyukawa, who draws the Railgun manga, is credited on animation character design cooperation, which is not a credit you see on a spin off made at arm’s length.

Maiko Iuchi has scored the franchise since 2008. J.C.STAFF has animated all of it. Whatever else changes, the house style does not.

Cast

All four leads return from A Certain Scientific Railgun S, which aired in 2013.

  • Shizuri Mugino, Ami Koshimizu
  • Rikou Takitsubo, Aya Suzaki
  • Frenda Seivelun, Maaya Uchida
  • Saiai Kinuhata, Chinatsu Akasaki
  • Choubi Hanano, Hana Hishikawa

Thirteen years between a supporting run and a starring one is a long gap to hold a cast together, and the fact that nobody was recast is the clearest signal that this was planned rather than opportunistic.

Opening and ending themes

The opening is Ghost Sequence by East Of Eden. The ending is Genshi Kuzushi by Kishida Kyoudan and THE Akeboshi Rockets.

Both artists are franchise regulars, and the ending title is a small joke for readers: Genshi Kuzushi is the Japanese name of Mugino’s ability, the one localised as Meltdowner.

Do you need to have watched the other Toaru anime?

It helps, but less than the franchise’s reputation suggests. The useful background is A Certain Scientific Railgun S, which is where ITEM appear and where their relationships are established. A Certain Magical Index, the 2008 series that started everything, sets up Academy City and the esper ranking system but spends little time on the Dark Side.

If you are starting cold, the premise is self contained enough to follow: a city of people with powers, a layer of deniable operations beneath it, and four girls who work in that layer.
