One Piece Anime Return in 2027: What Has Actually Been Confirmed

The One Piece anime has finished for 2026 and returns in 2027, but no date has been announced. Episode 1180 aired on Fuji TV on Sunday 27 September and closed the first season of the Elbaph arc. New episodes are confirmed for next year. No month, no window, and no episode 1181 air date exist yet, from Toei or anyone else.

That is the honest state of it. Below is everything that has actually been confirmed, the numbers behind why the anime keeps stopping, and the One Piece that does have dates in 2027.

What has been confirmed

  • Episode 1180 aired 27 September 2026 and was the last episode of the year.
  • The anime continues in 2027. That much is official.
  • No return date, month or season has been given.
  • Dragon Ball Super: Beerus takes over the Sunday 23:15 slot on Fuji TV from 11 October 2026.
  • The Elbaph arc continues when the anime comes back. Where exactly it resumes has not been said.

When will episode 1181 actually air?

Nobody outside Toei knows, and it is worth being blunt about that because you will see confident dates floating around.

Watch out for the 3 January 2027 date. AniList currently carries episode 1181 with a scheduled slot of Sunday 3 January 2027 at 23:16 JST. That is a placeholder generated from the old weekly pattern, not an announcement. Trackers fill those in automatically when a series goes on break, and sites scrape them.

There are two solid reasons to doubt January. First, the previous break ran three months and the anime came back in April, not in the winter. Second, the Sunday 23:15 slot is not empty: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus moves into it on 11 October, and no episode count has been announced for that series either, so there is no public date on which the slot frees up.

Most people covering this expect spring 2027, around April. That is a reasonable read of the pattern rather than a fact, and this page will say so until Toei names a date.

The numbers behind the break

This is not a delay and it is not a production crisis. It is the schedule working as designed, and the episode list makes that obvious.

In October 2025, Toei Animation and One Piece producer Ryuta Koike announced that from 2026 the anime would cap its output at 26 episodes a year, instead of running almost every week as it had since 1999. Toei’s stated reason was that the new schedule lets episodes “incorporate more content, tempo, and pacing of the manga while continuing to leverage the unique storytelling that is only possible with animation”.

Here is what that produced in practice:

Last episode of 2025 1155, on 28 December 2025
Break January to March 2026, three months
Elbaph arc début Episode 1156, 5 April 2026
Last episode of 2026 1180, on 27 September 2026
Episodes broadcast in 2026 25, one short of the cap

The missing 26th slot is not a mystery either. Sunday 5 July went to the ONE PIECE HEROINES special instead of a numbered episode, which is why the run lands on 25.

So the shape is now a run of roughly six months followed by a break of roughly six months. Last time the break was three months because the year ended in December. This one started in September, which is why the gap looks alarming by comparison. It is the same annual budget of episodes, spent earlier.

Where the story stopped

Episode 1180 closed the first season of the Elbaph arc, which began with episode 1156 on 5 April. Elbaph picked up after the Egghead arc, which the anime wrapped in 2025 and which we covered in the Egghead arc episode guide.

If you have been away, those 25 episodes are a clean block to catch up on. They start at a natural entry point and they finish at one, which is the upside of the seasonal model that rarely gets mentioned.

For what is actually on air while One Piece is away, our weekly anime schedule lists every airing series with its next episode time, and the October 2026 premiere guide covers what starts this month.

What One Piece fans actually get in 2027

The television anime is the only part of the franchise without a date. Everything else has one.

THE ONE PIECE, February 2027, Netflix. WIT Studio’s remake of the original story arrives in February 2027 as seven episodes released at once, covering roughly the first 50 chapters and ending at the Baratie, where Luffy meets Sanji. A teaser went up in June 2026 and Mayumi Tanaka, Luffy’s voice since 1999, returns in the role. So the gap in the weekly anime is partly filled before the weekly anime even comes back.

Where to watch the Elbaph episodes now

Crunchyroll streamed the 2026 run as it aired and carries the full series in most territories, subtitled and dubbed. Netflix and Hulu also hold One Piece in a number of regions, though the catalogue and the episode blocks vary by country.

Because those regional splits change, the franchise’s own official anime page is the reliable place to check what is available where you are.

A franchise pause is not unusual any more

One Piece is not alone in this. The Naruto franchise has had no weekly anime on air since March 2023, and it took until last week for a new Naruto anime to be announced at all. Long running shonen series are moving away from continuous weekly production towards shorter, denser runs, and One Piece capping itself at 26 episodes a year is the clearest example of it.

Whether that is good depends on what you value. The manga gap closes more slowly, but the adaptation stops padding to stay behind, which was the complaint for most of the last decade.
