Sixteen years after its last chapter ran in Weekly Shonen Jump, PSYREN is finally getting the anime that fans voted for three times over. Toshiaki Iwashiro’s psychic death-game series premieres in the first week of October with a full main cast, Satelight animating, an opening from CLAN QUEEN and the original author involved in the scripts. Here is everything confirmed about the release date, cast, staff, story and where it will air.
PSYREN anime release date
The PSYREN anime premieres on Monday, 5 October 2026 at 23:00 JST on TOKYO MX and BS11, with Sun TV following an hour later at 24:00. That makes it one of the very first fall 2026 premieres, landing two days before The Detective Is Already Dead Season 2 and A Returner’s Magic Should Be Special Season 2 open the mid-week rush.
The project was announced on 15 December 2025 with a teaser visual and trailer. The main cast additions came on 23 January 2026, the October window was confirmed on 28 March at AnimeJapan, broadcasters were revealed with the second teaser on 17 June, and the exact date, main key visual, full trailer and opening theme all dropped together on 11 September 2026.

What the story is about
Ageha Yoshina is a high schooler who solves other people’s problems for cash. One evening he finds a red phone card left in a public telephone booth, printed with a single word: PSYREN. A few days later his classmate and childhood friend Sakurako Amamiya, who carried the same card, vanishes without a trace, and Ageha realises she is the latest in a nationwide string of disappearances that rumour pins on a secret organisation called Psyren.
Calling the number on the card pulls him into Psyren’s game. Players are transported to a ruined, monster-infested world and must survive long enough to reach the exit, then return to everyday life until the next summons. Ageha’s search for Sakurako becomes a fight to stay alive, and then something bigger: working out what the wasteland is, why it exists, and whether it can be prevented.
The manga is built around a growing cast of players, from the cheerful, hot-headed Hiryu Asaga and the money-minded joker Kabuto Kirisaki to the popular actor Oboro Mochizuki, who joins for the thrill of it, plus the mentor figure Matsuri Yakumo and the first major antagonist, Dholaki. All of them are confirmed for the anime. Which of the manga’s arcs the first season covers has not been announced.
Where the manga stands
PSYREN ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from December 2007 to November 2010 and is complete at 16 volumes, published in English by Viz Media. It never got an adaptation during its run, but it became a fixture of Japan’s “manga we want to see animated” polls, being nominated three times, which is the case the production is explicitly making for reviving it now. To mark the announcement Shueisha reprinted the entire series, and Iwashiro has said he has been closely involved in the anime’s scripts. With a finished story to work from, the adaptation does not face the usual catch-up problem.

Soma Saito, who voices Oboro, has said the character was his favourite in the manga and that he had hoped for an adaptation for years before being cast.

Where to watch PSYREN
In Japan the series airs on TOKYO MX, BS11 and Sun TV, and the official site says streaming will roll out “on various services in sequence” without naming them yet. Internationally, no simulcast partner has been announced. The production has an English-language official site and X account, and its trailers are published on the “It’s Anime” channel run by co-producer REMOW, which usually signals a wide global release, but we will not list a platform until one is confirmed.
Why PSYREN matters
Late-2000s Jump had a cluster of well-liked series that ended before the streaming era could give them an anime, and PSYREN was the one readers kept asking about. Its premise, a survival game that cuts between a dying future and a present that can still be changed, aged well: it reads today like a bridge between Gantz-style death games and the time-loop thrillers that dominate the 2020s. An adaptation with a completed source, the author on the writing team and a studio known for action animation is about as good a setup as a revival gets.
