Five years after Siesta’s story seemed to end, The Detective Is Already Dead Season 2 is finally days away. After a production delay pushed it out of the summer slot, the sequel to ENGI’s 2021 light-novel adaptation now has a locked broadcast date, a returning core staff, a new opening and ending, and a pair of new faces that fans of Nigojuu’s novels will recognise immediately. The Detective Is Already Dead Season 2 release date
The Detective Is Already Dead Season 2 (Tantei wa mou, Shindeiru. Season 2, or “Tanmoshi” to Japanese fans) premieres on Wednesday, 7 October 2026. The official site lists a 22:30 JST broadcast slot on TOKYO MX, with the same-night airings on AT-X (21:30) and BS NTV (24:30). In Japan, d Anime Store streams each episode from 22:00 on Wednesdays, ahead of television, and other domestic services follow from Monday, 12 October.
This is not the date the season was originally supposed to have. Season 2 was first slated for July 2026, but on 15 March 2026 the production committee announced a delay to October “for production reasons”. The three-month slide means the show now lands in the crowded fall line-up alongside The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 and Blue Box Season 2.

What the story is about
Kimihiko Kimizuka has a talent for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Four years before the series begins, that talent put him on a hijacked plane next to a silver-haired girl who introduced herself as Siesta, a “legendary detective”. She recruited him on the spot, and the pair spent three years chasing a shadowy organisation called SPES around the world. Then Siesta died. Kimihiko went home, enrolled in high school and tried to be boring.
Season 1 followed what happened when that boring life fell apart: a classmate, Nagisa Natsunagi, asked him to find the owner of her transplanted heart, and the trail led straight back to Siesta, the idol Yui Saikawa, the agent Charlotte Arisaka Anderson and the unfinished business of SPES. It closed with Kimihiko choosing to keep working as a detective’s assistant, even though the detective is already dead.
Season 2 picks up from there. The official site’s headline additions are two new characters: Noches, a silver-haired maid who is voiced by Saki Miyashita, the same actress who plays Siesta, and Scarlet, a fanged, white-haired man played by Nobuhiko Okamoto, along with Mia Whitlock (Akari Komiyama). The casting choice for Noches is the loudest hint yet about where the story is heading. Readers of the novels will know where those introductions point, but the anime has not confirmed which volumes it will cover or how many episodes it has, so treat any arc-by-arc breakdown online as speculation for now.
Where the light novels stand
Nigojuu’s The Detective Is Already Dead began publishing under KADOKAWA’s MF Bunko J label in November 2019 with illustrations by Umibouzu, and the series is still ongoing. A manga adaptation ran from May 2020 and has since finished at six volumes. The first anime season adapted roughly the first two novels, so there is a deep well of untouched material for the sequel to draw from. Yen Press publishes the novels in English.

Where to watch The Detective Is Already Dead Season 2
In Japan the season airs on TOKYO MX, BS NTV and AT-X, with d Anime Store carrying the earliest stream every Wednesday at 22:00 JST. Internationally, season 1 was licensed by Funimation and is now hosted on Crunchyroll, which still lists the series in its catalogue. Crunchyroll has not yet formally announced a season 2 simulcast at the time of writing; given the season 1 history it is the most likely home, but we will update this guide once a platform confirms.
Why this sequel matters
Season 1 was divisive. It opened with a well-received double-length episode, then settled into an uneven mix of mystery, harem comedy and supernatural action that left critics lukewarm and fans hungry for the darker material that comes later in the novels. A sequel arriving five years on, with the same director and character designer but a new series composer in Deko Akao, is a rare chance for an adaptation to course-correct with the benefit of hindsight.
It also lands in one of the busiest premiere weeks of the year.
