An office worker falls asleep at his desk and wakes up in the cockpit of the best ship in a space sim he used to play. Reborn as a Space Mercenary: I Woke Up Piloting the Strongest Starship! turns that premise into a fall 2026 TV series from studio A-CAT, and its goal is refreshingly small: the hero does not want to save the galaxy, he wants to earn enough as a mercenary to buy a detached house with a garden. The broadcast and streaming plan was finalised on 15 September along with the main key visual and trailer, so here is everything confirmed about the release date, cast, staff and where to watch.
Reborn as a Space Mercenary release date
The series premieres on Sunday, 4 October 2026 at 21:30 JST on TOKYO MX, with BS11 following the same night at 23:00. That start time is 12:30 UTC, which works out to 8:30 a.m. Eastern and 5:30 a.m. Pacific on the Sunday, or 1:30 p.m. in the UK.
The rest of the Japanese rollout is staggered across the first full week of October. AT-X joins on Tuesday 6 October at 22:30, WOWOW the same night at 25:00 (1:00 a.m. Wednesday) with the whole run scheduled as a free broadcast, Yomiuri TV at 25:29 (1:29 a.m.), and Chukyo TV last on Saturday 10 October at 26:25 (2:25 a.m. Sunday), where the first episode is pushed back to 27:05.
Streaming in Japan is split. d Anime Store and ABEMA simulcast each episode at 21:30 JST on Sunday, at the same time as the TOKYO MX broadcast, while every other domestic service waits until Friday 9 October and then runs five days behind at 21:30.

What the story is about
Takahiro Sato is a tired company employee with a long commute and a habit of sinking his free hours into a science-fiction game. One morning he wakes up inside it, sitting in the cockpit of a fully kitted-out starship, in a universe where he can trade, explore or take contracts as he likes. He renames himself Hiro, introduces himself as “Captain Hiro, mercenary”, and starts taking jobs.
What makes the setup work is how ordinary his ambitions stay. Two things bother him about living in space: there is nowhere to buy the carbonated drinks he lives on, and he has no home to come back to between contracts. So he settles on a target that is absurdly expensive by the standards of a rookie mercenary — a detached house with a garden, on an actual planet — and the whole series is built around earning it, one bounty at a time.
He does not stay solo for long. Rescuing a girl named Mimi from thugs gets him an operator who has nowhere else to go; a veteran space elf called Elma drills the basics of the trade into him whether he wants the lessons or not; a noble-born officer in the star system’s navy takes a professional interest in the newcomer who wiped out a wanted crew; and a custom maidroid built to Hiro’s own template handles everything from housework to combat analysis.
Where the novels and manga stand
The series began as a web novel by Ryuto and has been published in print since 2019 by KADOKAWA under the KADOKAWA BOOKS imprint, with illustrations by Tetsuhiro Nabeshima. It is still running. A manga adaptation drawn by Shunichi Matsui has been going since the same year, and both the novels and the manga are available in English from Seven Seas Entertainment, which is unusual for a fall premiere at this level of popularity and means newcomers can read ahead immediately.
Ryuto marked the adaptation on the official site with a line that fits the book’s own tone: after years of playing games and writing novels in a loop, “finally, an anime”. Nabeshima, who mostly illustrates fantasy, described drawing hard science fiction as having to switch brains.
Studio, staff and cast
Animation is by studio A-CAT, a studio whose mecha and CG work makes it a sensible fit for a show that has to sell ship-to-ship combat every week; the mechanical designs are credited to A-CAT’s own design team, with prop design by Yumi Sugihara and art setting by COSMO PROJECT’s Natsumi Ueno. Norihiko Nagahama directs, Takamitsu Kouno handles series composition, and Masami Sueoka adapts Nabeshima’s designs for animation. Jin Aketagawa is sound director, with music by Kenta Higashiooji. The production is credited to HAYATE.
The cast is led by Makoto Furukawa (Saitama in One-Punch Man) as Captain Hiro, Konomi Inagaki as Mimi, Anna Nagase as the elf mercenary Elma, Haruka Shiraishi as the navy officer Serena Holz, Saori Onishi as the maidroid Mei and Kana Ueda as Shoko. Mei and Shoko were revealed only with the main trailer in September.
FLOW perform the opening theme, “UNSTOPPABLE”, released through SACRA MUSIC; the ending, “MY WAY”, is by the trio ASTERISM.

No English-language simulcast has been announced yet. The production committee’s listing covers Japanese platforms only, and neither Crunchyroll nor any other international service had confirmed the show at the time of writing. Given that Seven Seas publishes the source in English and Aniplex is on the committee, an overseas pickup close to the premiere is likely, but nothing is official — we will update this page the moment it is.
Why it is worth a look
Isekai is not short of entries this season, but almost all of them land in the same medieval fantasy. Swapping the sword for a gunship and the demon lord for a mortgage gives this one a shape of its own, and the low-stakes goal — a house, a garden, a fridge full of fizzy drinks — keeps the comedy grounded even when the space battles are not. If it lands, it sits alongside A Returner’s Magic Should Be Special Season 2 and Sasaki and Peeps Season 2 as the fall’s most watchable light-novel adaptations.
