Magic Knight Rayearth (2026) premieres on October 7, 2026, a brand-new anime adaptation of CLAMP’s 1990s classic made for the franchise’s 30th anniversary. It is not a sequel and not a remaster: it is a fresh take on the story of Hikaru, Umi and Fuu, three Tokyo schoolgirls pulled into the world of Cephiro, with a new studio, a Yuki Kajiura score and one of the most distinctive creative teams of the Fall 2026 season. Here is what has been confirmed, what is still open, and how it relates to the 1994 series.
Magic Knight Rayearth 2026 release date
The series begins in Japan on October 7, 2026, in a Wednesday late-night slot on TV Asahi, which places it in the Fall 2026 lineup alongside The Apothecary Diaries Season 3, Blue Box Season 2 and Ranma ½ Season 3. An episode count has not been announced; the original 1994 adaptation covered the first manga in 20 episodes, and the new series is expected to adapt the same three-volume story, so a single cour is the most likely shape.
International streaming has not been confirmed yet. The official site and the @rayearth_info account are where the platform announcement will appear; we will update this page when it does.

The story
Three girls from different Tokyo schools, Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki and Fuu Hououji, are on separate field trips to Tokyo Tower when a blinding light drops them into Cephiro, a world sustained by the will of its Pillar, Princess Emeraude. The princess has been captured by her high priest Zagato, Cephiro is collapsing without her prayers, and the three are told by the mage Clef that they are the legendary Magic Knights who must awaken the Rune-Gods, giant armoured guardians, and rescue her.
What made Rayearth unusual in 1993 and still does is the mix: it is a magical-girl story, a fantasy quest and a mecha series at once, and its ending is one of the most famous rug-pulls in shojo manga. The 2026 version has every incentive to keep that ending intact, and the creative-team choices suggest it is leaning into the darker, more action-driven side of the material.

Studio and staff
The new series is produced at E&H Production, the studio founded by Seong-Hu Park, the director of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 and The God of High School, who is credited here as creative producer. TMS Entertainment, which animated the 1994 series, is involved on the production side. Confirmed staff so far:
- Original creator: CLAMP
- Creative producer: Seong-Hu Park
- Music: Yuki Kajiura and Shiho Terada
- Mecha (“Devil”) design and mechanical director: Hiroki Mutaguchi
- Director of photography: Hitoshi Tamura
- Editing: Keisuke Yanagi
The two headline names tell you what kind of show this is meant to be. Park’s involvement points to action animation on a scale the 1994 series never had, and Yuki Kajiura, the composer behind Sword Art Online, Fate/Zero and Demon Slayer, is as prestigious a music credit as a fantasy anime can get. A series director has not been named on the official materials yet.

How it compares to the 1994 anime
The original Magic Knight Rayearth anime aired from October 1994 on Yomiuri TV, running 20 episodes for the first story and 29 for the second, and it remains one of the defining shojo series of the decade. It also changed a great deal from the manga: the pacing was stretched, new characters and side plots were added, and the second season in particular diverged heavily from CLAMP’s version. The 2026 project is being framed as a return to the source material, in the same way the recent Ranma ½ and Urusei Yatsura remakes went back to their manga.
The manga is short, three volumes for the first story and three for the second, and it is available in English from Kodansha in a collector’s edition, so it is an easy read before October if you want to know where the new series is heading.
Why it matters
Fall 2026 is heavy on sequels; Rayearth is one of the few genuine new starts, and it brings a CLAMP property back to television for the first time in years. Between the anniversary framing, the Kajiura score and a studio built around high-end action, it has a real chance of doing for Rayearth what the 2024 remake did for Ranma ½: introducing a 30-year-old classic to an audience that never saw the original.
