A Returner’s Magic Should Be Special Season 2 release date
Season 2 premieres on Wednesday, 7 October 2026 at 24:45 JST on Fuji TV’s +Ultra programming block, which technically makes it the small hours of Thursday 8 October in Japan (and why some databases list 8 October as the start date). Kansai TV follows on Thursday 8 October (26:15), Tokai TV on Saturday 10 October (26:00), and AT-X carries it at 21:30 with repeats on Mondays and Saturdays.
Domestic streaming starts the same night: d Anime Store, U-NEXT and Anime Houdai stream each episode from 25:15 on Wednesdays, ahead of everyone else, with FOD, ABEMA, Hulu Japan, Prime Video, DMM TV and the rest of the Japanese platforms following from Sunday 11 October at noon.
The season was first announced on 10 October 2025 as a “2026” project; the exact date and the full broadcast plan were only confirmed on 15 September 2026, alongside the second trailer.

What the story is about
The Shadow World is a parallel dimension that keeps bleeding into reality, and its worst outbreak, the Shadow Labyrinth, ends humanity. Desir Herrman dies in that final battle alongside his friends, then opens his eyes thirteen years earlier, on the day he enrolled at Hebrion Academy, the Empire’s top school for mages. Armed with his rare “reverse calculation” magic, which analyses and dismantles other people’s spells, and with the knowledge of everything that is coming, he sets out to rebuild his old party years ahead of schedule.
Season 1 covered exactly that: Desir recruiting the commoner wind mage Romantica Eru, the timid but lightning-fast swordsman Pram Schneider and the aristocratic ice-magic swordswoman Azest Kingscrown, and dragging his misfit party through Hebrion’s rankings and the first Shadow World incursions.
Season 2 picks up in the brief calm after those events. According to the official introduction, Desir is haunted by a nightmare of Romantica’s death, and the figure at the centre of it is Dadenewf, the Demon of Ruin, the enemy responsible for killing her in the original timeline. The new key visual shows the Hebrion party facing this new threat directly. The anime has not said how many novel arcs the season will cover or how many episodes it runs, so treat any chapter-by-chapter predictions as guesswork for now.
Where the source material stands
A Returner’s Magic Should Be Special began as a Korean web novel by Usonan, and it was the webtoon adaptation drawn by Wookjakga, published by D&C Media, that made it an international hit. The webtoon ran from May 2018 to June 2024 and is complete; in Japan it is distributed through Piccoma. Yen Press publishes the novels in English, and the webtoon is available in English on Tapas. The first anime season adapted the opening stretch of the story, so the sequel has years of finished material to work from.

In Japan the season airs on Fuji TV, Kansai TV, Tokai TV and AT-X, with d Anime Store, U-NEXT and Anime Houdai streaming first. Internationally, season 1 was a Crunchyroll simulcast and remains on the service with an English dub. Crunchyroll has not yet made a formal season 2 announcement at the time of writing; given the season 1 arrangement and Aniplex’s involvement it is the obvious candidate, and we will update this page as soon as a platform confirms.
Why this sequel matters
The first season arrived in the middle of the 2023 wave of Korean web-novel adaptations and was generally received as competent rather than spectacular: fans liked the cast chemistry and Desir’s analytical fights, but the pacing rushed through the academy arcs. A second season with the same writer and character designer, a new director, and a story that finally moves past the school-tournament stage is a chance to show why the webtoon built such a large following.
